Breast Reduction For Men NYC

The overdevelopment of male breasts, also known as gynecomastia, affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. This condition may be caused by a hormonal imbalance or side effects from drugs (obesity can give the appearance of gynecomastia, but is actually termed pseudogyecomastia). No matter the cause, the condition may pose significant problems in a man's life.

Men with large or sagging breasts, or excessively "puffy" nipples, are often physically and emotionally uncomfortable and self-conscious. Male breast reduction is an excellent way to help them feel more comfortable and confident.

What's Involved in Male Breast Reduction?

Male breast reduction surgery is usually performed under general anesthetic on an outpatient basis. The surgery typically takes one to three hours. Dr. Karlinsky may use several techniques, depending on your specific goals and condition.

If the enlarged breasts are primarily caused by excessive fatty tissue, liposuction can be performed through tiny incisions to remove the excess fat. The incision may be made around the edge of the areola (the area around the nipple) or in the underarm. If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause, that tissue will be also excised, or cut out.

If large amounts of fat or glandular tissue have been removed, excess skin may not reshape well to the new contour of the breast. In these cases, the excess skin may have to be removed as well, using some of the techniques used in breast lifts. Dr. Karlinsky closes the incisions using sutures and covers them with a dressing. The chest is wrapped to keep the skin firmly in place.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

Following male breast reduction surgery, most of our patients will have some bruising, swelling, and discomfort, but this usually dissipates after a few days and can be reduced with prescribed medication. To help reduce swelling, Dr. Karlinsky will provide you with an elastic pressure garment that should be worn for about two weeks, and for several weeks after at night. Swelling and any skin discoloration will partially subside after a week or two, when Dr. Karlinsky removes your stitches.

You can expect to return to work in approximately one week. You may also begin light aerobic exercise after a week, but Dr. Karlinsky recommends avoiding strenuous activities for about three to four weeks following the surgery.
